A Clovis & Portales Survival Guide
When I heard there was going to be a fabulous new, respectable and trustworthy day care opening in Portales, I jumped for joy. Not because I need a babysitter but because my friends do! And not just anyone is good enough for my favorite babies!
For the parent who is accustomed to having high standard care for their child, this is your new favorite place. I have to admit that I don’t know much about parenting (or childcare for that matter) but, I would assume that there are a couple things in life that a parent takes very seriously. One would be the food that your baby eats and another would be the people who are trusted to watch your baby when you are not around. Safety first, right? I know some mothers who don’t let anyone watch their babies. Yeah… at all.
I don’t even remember how I heard about Bright Beginnings. I eventually followed the string back to the source and contacted Breanna. I invited her out for coffee and picked her brain. I had the opportunity to hear her story and when I left Do Drop In I thought… This is perfect. Absolutely perfect!
Meet Breanna. She has been caring for children since she was old enough to hold a baby at her hometown church group. A baby sitter through her teens. She left for India after high school to assist in orphanages. She says it was in those days and with those children that she knew this was her calling. When Breanna found herself at the end of her time overseas, she started perusing her education. She obtained a degree in Social Work while helping her cousin achieve her dream as a daycare operator. She nannied. She continued babysitting. She fell in love and got married.
Enter Portales. Breanna and husband are based here now and they are not planning on leaving anytime soon. She continues to do well for the community she is in and has decided to address the childcare issue in Portales. (YES!!! Finally!) After hearing the gritty details about all that is involved to keep her standards high, I truly feel that she is not charging enough. Hats off to this girl for putting herself out there to pursue a dream and super kudos for not half assing it even though she probably could get away with it. This is the exact opposite of a person saying they will watch your kids only to have them play with toys in the living room while the ‘sitter ‘watches Desperate Housewives all day.
“Everyday should be an adventure for the children and parents who come to Portales need a quality resource for childcare”
Every day there will be a curriculum, not because she has to but because she wants the best for her clients. I asked for (demanded) a tour of the facilities even though at the time it was under construction. Her home was being remodeled to accommodate a full on day care and meet state requirements. Her husband was working away in the yard and we sipped limeade as she explained her plans and her goals.
Children will spend their days engaged in a creative space. They will learn through play and have a safe place to be outdoors. She works toward a healthy balance of learning and ‘letting kids be kids’. Communication with parents is very important to her so that they are comfortable. She is happy to text photos and updates throughout the day. Breanna also hosts “Date Nights” for parents twice a month. A child free evening for parents? How fabulous! I follow her day care on FaceBook like a creep and recently read the memo:
Attn parents: with the hot week ahead we will likely be doing a lot of water play outside! Feel free to send your little ones with a bathing suit if you don’t want their clothes to get all wet. :)
How cool is that?! The kids must adore her.
I really want to see Bright Beginnings Day Care succeed for a few different reasons. One, Breanna is such a treasure of a person and has really dedicated herself to go above and beyond for children all over the world. Two, this is 100% by far the nicest facility that I have seen for childcare in the area. Three, this is not a kiddie storage unit. There will not be many kids at any one time. She is keeping it small so each child gets the attention that parents are paying for.
I think its only a matter of time before Bright Beginnings sees a waiting list for date nights and think that Clovis mommies and daddies will be making the worthwhile commute for their little one’s wellbeing. Word of mouth is the only way to hear about Bright Beginnings since Breanna doesn’t advertise. If you have any comments or want to share your experience, please feel free to spill the beans in the comments below!
